WESTSIDE

Deemed the “Westside” because it sits west of State Street, this neighborhood is recognized as the oldest established residential area in Santa Barbara, along with being it most densely populated and most diverse. What was once open grazing range and farmland is now full of life. With a close proximity to both beach and Downtown, Westside residents normally walk or bike to these areas nearby for a fun day spent in the sun or dining and shopping on State Street. Maintaining historical integrity, over half of the homes in this area were built prior to 1940.

Urban Rental

The Westside area is located west of the 101 Freeway to the edge of the Mesa, it’s bound to the north by Las Positas Road and South by Santa Barbara City College. This is a predominantly urban area with 70% of residents renting property in that region.

History

A historical reference associated with the Westside includes a British scientist-explorer named Captain George Vancouver that anchored his ship, the Discovery, off of West Beach in 1793 and had his cook cut stove-wood from the Mesa Oaks and refilled his water tanks near the Mesa bluffs.

Restaurant

If you’re looking for a Westside restaurant, residents enjoy proclaimed Westside landmark, Super Cucas, for authentic Mexican food on West Micheltorena Street.
